Twitter improves its diversity numbers

Twitter has improved its workplace diversity numbers heading into 2017. While its increases are a positive, many, including Jeffrey Siminoff, the company’s head of inclusion and diversity feel there is still more work to be done. And he is right.

According to Cnet “37 percent of its 3,000 employees are women, higher than its 2016 goal of 35 percent. Women in leadership positions are now at 30 percent, compared to its goal of 25 percent. Underrepresented minorities make up 11 percent of the overall staff and 9 percent of the company’s tech roles, hitting 2016 goals.”

While these numbers again are great in terms of increases, there is always room for improvement. I am not particular on criticizing a company like Twitter that has historically struggled with diversity, especially on the heels of improvement. While I understand and support the push for an even better increase, I think this is a good first step. As we move into 2017 a higher bar should be set yes, but it is a good start.

Now is the time for Twitter to continue its push and expand on its goals. Time will truly tell their commitment but for now, a step in the right direction.
